Find out what it's like working with us
We’re a small team of just under 60 staff, that accepts complaints about all types of lawyers in Scotland. We always try to resolve cases informally, if possible, but can take formal decisions and award up to £20,000 compensation. For serious issues around the conduct of solicitors we perform some initial functions, but then pass the case to the relevant professional body.
For more detailed information on who we are and our functions click on this link – What we do and how it works webpage.
We are an equal opportunities employer and we’re open on both professional and work experience. We want to build a diverse team, so would positively encourage applications from all candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion, pregnancy or maternity.
We pride ourselves on creating a culture that puts you at the heart of what we do. Staff have autonomy over their work and, in most cases, choose where and when they want to work. Great! You are interested in working for us. Below is all the information that you need to know about how to apply for a job with us.
What you need to do
The following information is what we recommend that you do before applying for the role.
- Read over the application pack and relevant supporting documents. We are a SCQF inclusive recruiter, this means that we look for skills as opposed to qualifications. Make sure you have the relevant skill level by checking the SCQF Inclusive website – SCQF Inclusive Website Link.
- Brilliant, you have the skills we are looking for. Now is your time to shine, telling us in your application how you meet the key criteria and skills that we are looking for. This information is what we grade applicants on so it is very important that you take the time to get this right.
- Send in your application before the closing date and time. Applications that are late will not be considered, sorry.
What we do next
When your application comes into us we redact any identifying information. What we mean by this is anything that could show your age, ethnicity, social background etc is removed. We do this to ensure that your skills shine through and remove unconscious bias within our recruitment process.
Your redacted application is passed to the hiring managers, who assess applications against the key skills we are asking for in the application pack and supporting documents. We mark every applicant against these, and the candidates who score the highest are invited to the next stage of the process.
We will contact ALL applicants after this stage to tell you if your application has been successful or not. Unfortunately if you have not been successful at this stage we are not able to give you feedback as we have so many applications.
The next steps
Depending on the role we will either invite you straight to interview, or ask you to complete a second stage assessment.
Second stage assessment
The assessment is normally a practical assessment and will be marked by hiring managers against set criteria, as was the case with your application form. Additionally, we redact identifying information at this stage as well.
All dates and whether there is a second assessment is set out in the job pack, so you are aware from the beginning of the process. Full information on the assessment criteria is sent out when you are informed if you are successful or not.
Again, we will be in touch to let you know if you have been successful at this stage or not. Again we are not able to provide individual feedback at this point of the process.
Interview
Excellent, we think you have the right set of skills to join our team. We will then invite you to interview. The HR team will be in touch with you about the date and time for the interview. We use a STAR approach to interviews, where we look to assess your competencies against those in the job pack.
For more information on STAR interview techniques click on the following link – STAR Interview Techniques on Indeed Website.
All candidates will be contacted and informed whether they have been successful or not. If you have not been successful then you will be offered feedback by the interview panel.
We want to ensure that every person has the best opportunity to work for us. We feel that we have a great culture where everyone can be themselves. We welcome applications from everyone and if there is anything that we can do to help you in the application process please contact our HR Team, who will be willing to support you – email our HR Team using this link.
Please note that we offer a day one right to flexible working requests, where we endeavour to help work fit around your life. If you would like to discuss these opportunities please contact our HR Team using the following email address – email our HR Team using this link.
